Colors of Time, Sergio Pereira

Sergio Pereira is a Rio de Janeiro–born guitarist, vocalist, composer, and arranger whose music draws from bossa nova, samba, Brazilian jazz, and contemporary jazz improvisation. Shaped by the melodic language of João Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Carlos Lyra, and João Donato, he later expanded his harmonic and improvisational approach through jazz studies in New York. Pereira’s work often centers on original composition, guitar-led ensemble writing, wordless vocals, and rhythm-section interplay, with arrangements that connect Brazilian rhythmic traditions to a broader international jazz setting. Across his recordings, he has developed a musical identity rooted in melody, groove, and collaborative ensemble color.

Album Overview

On Colors of Time, guitarist, vocalist, composer, and arranger Sergio Pereira brings together a wide-ranging Brazilian jazz ensemble for a recording shaped by samba, bossa nova, jazz improvisation, vocal writing, and expanded instrumental color. Across eight original compositions, the album moves through electric and acoustic guitar textures, flute and keyboard writing, layered horns, vibraphone and marimba, strings, cavaquinho, berimbau, fretless bass, and percussion, allowing Pereira’s melodic approach and Brazilian rhythmic foundation to guide the program’s arc. The recording unfolds with a balance of arranged ensemble detail and open interaction, connecting lyrical song forms, rhythm-section movement, and socially aware themes within a cohesive contemporary Brazilian jazz setting.

From the album… the recording’s balance between groove, ensemble color, and conversational improvisation becomes especially clear on “So They Sleep.” The piece opens the album with an electric-bass foundation that is Jaco-informed, while cavaquinho, layered horn writing, flute, guitar, percussion, and wordless vocals create a bright, active texture around the Brazilian pulse. As the arrangement moves between composed passages and trading-eights interplay, the track offers an entry point into the album’s broader design: Brazilian rhythm used as an expressive framework for melody, interaction, and ensemble motion.
