Album Overview

On Rush, pianist and composer Lucian Ban returns to the Elevation ensemble with tenor saxophonist Abraham Burton, bassist John Hébert and drummer Eric McPherson, continuing a musical relationship that began two decades ago. The quartet gives Ban’s compositions room to move between defined themes and open interaction, with the writing drawing on both the jazz tradition and the more fluid language of contemporary improvisation.

The program also reflects several musical lineages important to Ban. Individual pieces look toward Abdullah Ibrahim, Andrew Hill, Larry Willis and Billy Strayhorn, while the closing “Golden Oriole” reaches back to an ancient Transylvanian folk song. Across the album, those references function less as recreations than as starting points for the ensemble’s own vocabulary of melody, rhythmic displacement, swing and collective improvisation.

“Serenade for Andrew” takes Andrew Hill as its point of reference, drawing on the angular melodic language and unsettled swing associated with Hill’s 1960s Blue Note recordings. Ban’s theme creates an asymmetrical framework for the quartet, while Abraham Burton’s tenor brings a direct connection to the jazz tradition at the center of the arrangement. The result makes the track a useful entry point into Rush: composed material remains defined, but the ensemble continually tests its edges through phrasing, rhythmic fluidity and interaction.
