MODERN JAZZ TODAY – EPISODE #137 WEEK OF 9-17-2018

Modern Jazz Today Episode #137, this week was an interesting week, between focusing on the impending hurricane set to swing through my area,

I had to take time out to rebuild a generator that took its downward spiral and beat the timing of Florence who is still today devasting areas with a surplus amount of rain.  Saturday, in between outside noises that held up the show until they passed, we all still found the joy in creating the program and keeping our focus on the music to soothe our worried minds.

In the new discoveries’ category, we took a look at Zion80, a 10-piece band that blends Afrobeat grooves, mystical Jewish melodies and improvisational madness.  The track “V’Shamru” off the Warriors album was a perfect fit to rejuvenate the day.

In the unearthed gems category, we jumped back to 2016 to bring focus to an MJT Favorite Flashback.  The music on ABENG utilizes progressive concepts in rhythm, harmony, and melody while keeping the listener (and the musicians playing the music) connected and engaged.  Drawing upon jazz-funk and jazz-rock influences ranging from Weather Report to Roy Ayers.  We chose the track “Mahishmatish,” for these exact reasons.
