Steve Coleman, “Horda” Review

Content of Column 1
Content of Column 1

Alto saxophonist Steve Coleman needs no introduction to the jazz community, we all know and respect his two masterpiece previous albums. Coleman is releasing a live set, Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. I (The Embedded Sets). Live is where the real energy of a group happens, and you hear moments you might not normally hear on a studio album. On Episode #133 we are going to introduce the track “Horda.” Sit back folks, you are in for a wild ride of empathetically rich and texturally sound moments with complex flavoring, bursting in your ears.

“Steve Coleman is moving in directions that embody the spirit of jazz, pulling from the counterpoint of the cosmos and with the Five Elements layering cross-rhythms to the vibratory frequencies that run throughout the universe.”
– Jeff Williams, Modern Jazz Today
