Carl Schultz Explores Cinematic Jazz on The Road to Trantor
Saxophonist, composer, and educator Carl Schultz brings imagination and narrative depth to his new album, The Road to Trantor, an eight-movement jazz suite inspired by the worlds of science fiction author Isaac Asimov.
Originally from the Philadelphia area, Schultz has built a career that bridges jazz tradition and original composition. His background includes nearly 1,000 performances as a touring member of The Glenn Miller Orchestra, appearances with modern large ensembles such as Brad Goode’s Polytonal Big Band, and extensive work as a soloist and composer. He earned degrees from SUNY Purchase, The University of the Arts, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Colorado.
Now based in Santa Clara, California, Schultz serves as Director of Jazz Studies at Santa Clara University and is an active clinician and guest lecturer nationwide.
The Road to Trantor is described by Schultz as “the soundtrack to a science fiction movie that only exists in my head.” Drawing inspiration from Asimov’s Foundation universe—without directly adapting it—the music unfolds cinematically, moving through themes of exploration, uncertainty, and discovery. Alongside saxophone and flute, Schultz incorporates effects pedals to expand the album’s sonic landscape.
The album features Adam Benjamin (piano, Rhodes), Tim Wendel (guitar), Zack Teran (bass), and Alwyn Robinson (drums) and follows Schultz’s earlier trio release, ACT reACT. Released on Origin Records, The Road to Trantor has a street date of November 21, 2025, offering radio programmers and listeners an imaginative, modern jazz work that blends storytelling, composition, and improvisation.
Now spinning on MJT, Saxophonist – Carl Schultz’s The Road to Trantor, cinematic jazz from Origin Records — eight movements inspired by science fiction, released November 21, 2025.
