In the unearthed gem category, we dipped into the vault and pulled out Charles Mingus’ “E’s Flat Ah’s Flat Too” off his Blues & Roots album on Atlantic Records. When in College I read his biography, that was certainly a page turner. Mingus knew how to create drama in music and text. The man had one foot in the traditions and one foot that is still not fully dropped into the future of jazz.

In the new discoveries category, this week it is guitarist Leni Stern. The album was released in the Spring of this year; but I just had the privilege of hearing it and certainly wanted to share it with all of you! We featured a cut off her album simply titled 3, the track was “Barambai.” There is something rapturous about Stern’s playing, her use of jazz embellishments and chromatics to chord tones paired with world beats and phrasing is a fascinating listen.
